What is an ounce?

An ounce is a unit of measurement used in the United States customary system, both before and after it was replaced by the metric system. The fluid ounce is commonly used to measure volume (in teaspoons, tablespoons, cups and pints), while both fluid ounces and dry ounces are used to measure weight. One fluid ounce is equal to 1/128 U.S. gallons; it is also equal to 1/8 U.S. pint or 1/16 U.S.

Cup measurements

A cup, or 8 US fluid ounces (oz), is equal to 240 milliliters (ml). A liter (L) is equal to 1000 ml. Four cups make up one quart, two quarts make up one gallon. Fourteen cups make up one imperial gallon and 16 cups make up one US gallon. If you want to convert from cups into other liquid measurements easily, use our calculator below

Volume of liquids

For liquids, volume and capacity are two different things. Volume is how much space is taken up by an object (not always straight up, since there may be some slant or curve). Capacity, on the other hand, is how much of that space can be used for holding liquid. For example, you might have a one-liter measuring cup (containing about 33% more than one quart) with room for only 500 milliliters of fluid. To find out how many fluid ounces are contained in any given container, just multiply by four. So if you have 1 liter of water at your disposal, you can pour 4 cups worth into it.

Ounces and cups – examples

There are 8 fluid ounces (fl oz) or 3.785 liters (l) in one US cup, which equals 236.58825 milliliters (ml). There are 6 US cups per gallon, 16 US cups per quart and 48 US cups per gallon. So if you have some recipe that requires 5 quarts of juice you can convert that easily: multiply by 2 to get 10 gallons or 4 quarts x 4 = 16 quarts. If your recipe calls for 1/4 of a cup of sugar multiply by four: 1/4 x 4 = 1 cup sugar.
